News Category: US News “Zero Waste” moves from the Fringes to the Mainstream in the US 18 November 2009
On 19 October 2009, the New York Times reported that “across the nation, an antigarbage strategy known as “zero waste” is moving from the fringes to the mainstream, taking hold in school cafeterias, national parks, restaurants, stadiums and corporations”. The article echoes the sentiments of Hilary Benn (see “Defra Aims for a Zero Waste Nation”) as the article explains that the policy is to produce less waste, to shun polystyrene foam containers or any other packaging that is not biodegradable and to recycle or compost whatever you can. The main driver for this policy is similar to the UK, diversion of waste from landfill. More information is available here: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/20/science/earth/20trash.html?_r=1 |
