News Category: US News Kerbside Composting Scheme Diverts 50% Waste from Landfill 14 January 2010
A recent study reported that since the introduction of a kerbside composting scheme in Boulder, Colorado in January 2009, residential participation in recycling and kerbside composting has decreased the amount of waste being sent to landfills by 16%.
This success has prompted city officials to consider adding meat, bones and dairy products to the composting scheme. These materials are currently banned from composting as they can attract wildlife. The city is also going to focus on commercial customers, who diverted only 29% of their waste from landfills in 2008.
