News Category: EU Waste Legislation and Guidance Publication of Draft Waste Management (Food Waste) Regulations in Ireland 30 September 2009
The Irish Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Mr. John Gormley, T.D., has published the draft Waste Management (Food Waste) Regulations 2009 which are intended to require the separate collection and biological treatment (through composting, biogas production or other suitable forms of recovery) of specified food waste arising in commercial premises.
It is envisaged that the proposed Regulations have the potential to divert significant amounts of commercial food waste from landfill towards more sustainable and environmentally beneficial practices and will contribute towards the achievement of Ireland's landfill diversion targets under Council Directive 99/31/EC on the landfill of waste.
Consultation on the draft Regulations closes on 14 October 2009.
