News Category: EU Waste Legislation and Guidance Dead Rabbits fuel Waste to Energy Plants 18 November 2009
Authorities in Stockholm are burning thousands of dead rabbits to fuel the city's waste-to-energy incinerators. Rabbits are a big problem in the parks of Stockholm and the annual cull to control numbers is now well underway. Last year 6,000 of the animals were killed and already 3,000 have been killed this season.
Incinerating the bodies presents a simple, rational solution that safely disposes of the carcasses while generating heat and power. Some animal rights groups have complained saying there are more humane ways to discourage a rabbit population explosion in parks, such as spraying the foliage with chemicals to make them less appetising.
